1. Turn off startup apps
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc → Startup apps tab. Disable anything you don't need the moment Windows loads (chat apps, updaters, game launchers). This alone can halve boot time.
2. Free up storage
Go to Settings → System → Storage and clear temporary files, or run cleanmgr from the Run box (Win + R). Keep at least 15–20% of your main drive free.
3. Uninstall programs you don't use
Settings → Apps → Installed apps. Remove trial software and old utilities — many run background services.
4. Upgrade to an SSD
If Windows still runs on a spinning hard drive (HDD), an SSD is the single biggest upgrade: faster boot, faster app launches, faster file copies. Even a budget SATA SSD transforms an older laptop.
5. Add RAM if you're running out
Open Task Manager → Performance → Memory. If it's regularly above 85%, add RAM. 8 GB is tight for modern Windows with a browser full of tabs; 16 GB is the comfortable target.
6. Find what's hogging resources
In Task Manager's Processes tab, sort by CPU, Memory and Disk. Close or uninstall the repeat offenders.
7. Update Windows and drivers
Run Windows Update, then get chipset, storage and graphics drivers from your PC maker's support page.
8. Scan for malware
Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection and run a full scan. A hidden miner or adware can quietly eat performance.
9. Skip "10x speed-up" cleaners
Registry cleaners and "RAM booster" apps rarely deliver, and some bundle adware. Stick to the proven steps above.
Bonus quick wins
- Set Power mode to Best performance when plugged in (Settings → System → Power).
- Restart properly at least once a week — Fast Startup means "Shut down" isn't a full reset.
